Are we ever going back to school?

I miss my second graders! I feel like it has been forever since I've seen them.  I did get to see some of them at the basketball game on Saturday.  I am always willing to go to anything and everything the kids do outside of school.  So, if your kiddo wants me to attend anything, I will be there!

I am hoping that we will be back at school tomorrow.  If we are then the Fundations unit 8 test will be on Wednesday.  We will take a quick check up on Tuesday to make sure we are ready though.  If we do not go to school tomorrow, then the test will be on Thursday.

This week starts our extra music concert practices.  The end of the day will be all about music and making sure that we are ready for you all in a couple of weeks.  If for any reason your kiddo can not be at the concert, let us know right away so Ms. Durand can make the necessary adjustments.  The concert is set for Tuesday, February 11th and an open house at the elementary school will follow.

I will be sending home a letter this week regarding an at home project.  It will be due on February 10th.  The second grade teachers wanted to make sure you all had more than enough time to work on it.

MAP testing went AMAZING! I was so impressed by the effort that all of the kids put into it.  Everyone's score went up in every area.  Some went up to what was projected and others went up SO much more than I could have ever imagined.  A few of the kids made me tear up due to their extraodinary growth.  I am so proud of these kids and you should be too!

Enjoy your day!

Ohana Means Family

Today is the last day of our Hawaii week. We have learned a lot about Hawaii and had so much fun! On Wednesday, we made Hawaiian people and wrote about what we would do if we lived there.  Today, we tried Hawaiian bread and fresh pineapple.  This is the first time I have had a majority of the kids like the foods I bring in to try.  We also watched Lilo and Stitch.  The kids were very excited when they saw something in the movie that we had learned about this week.  Finally, we will attempt the hula before we leave.  Below are some pictures from the week.

Also this week, Mrs. Brockway gave our classroom a fun gift.  We received a Smart Board game that is similar to Jeopardy.  It is all about science.  We played a couple games and the kids were so excited! Below if a picture of one of the teams "strategizing."

Finally, next week is MAP testing week.  It should go smoothly.  Just make sure your kiddo gets a lot of rest and a good breakfast.  Have a great 3 day weekend!

Looking ahead...

Hawaii Week Begins!

Yesterday we started Hawaii week. I put a beach scene video on the Smart Board and played traditional Hawaiian music.  We learned all about leis and there function in the Hawaiian culture.  Then, we made some of our own to wear for the week.  Later in the day we learned about Pele, the fire goddess.  This week, we will also be writing about Hawaii, making Hawaiian crafts, eating some Hawaiian food, watching a Hawaiian movie and more! HAWAII, HAWAII, HAWAII!

Today, we took the Fundations test for unit 7.  For the most part, the scores were really good.  There were a few that were below the 80% we are looking for.  I sent the kids scores home on either a green or orange index card.  They should be in their BEE folders today.  Unit 8 will start sometime this week.  It is only meant to be a one week unit but, with MAP testing next week, I am going to give it some more time.

We also began working with money.  Whenever you find an opportune moment, please help the kids learn to identify coins and their worth.  Once we have that down, it will be much easier to add and subtract the coins.
Friday is an early release day (11:05).  Have a good rest of your day!
