3...2...1...BLAST OFF!

We have officially begun our Solar System unit.  This week the kids were astronauts and traveled through space learning new things about every planet.  Mrs. Wanke made QR code task cards that were placed around the school.  Each student had an iPad and a log book.  Every code had either a video about the planet or something to read.  It was time consuming but, the kids loved it! We also researched some planets during writing.  Each student has chosen a planet to write a small research paper on.

We will begin unit 12 in Fundations next week and end the week with a check up. Friday, March 6th, marks the end of 3rd quarter and dismissal will be at 1:35.  On March 2nd, we will be having an all school Seuss day in honor of Read Across America day.  It will take the whole morning and I am sure the kids will LOVE it!

Remember, tomorrow (Friday) is an early release day at 11:05!

The boys were not enjoying Justin Bieber!

Our Week in the Tropics

This was such a fun week! Here is the low down on our Hawaii Week!

Monday- Our Smart Board had a tropical background with real moving waves accompanied by classic Hawaiian music. Our morning work this week was about a Hawaiian map and a tourist map.  We learned about leis and their place in Hawaiian culture and then made our own! We all got Hawaiian name tags that had our actual name and the Hawaiian translation. In the afternoon, we got books about how to speak Hawaiian, had a limbo contest, beach ball speed ball and beach ball hot potato.

Tuesday- We went over some slides about Hawaiian culture.  They included, pig roasts, surfing, boating, underwater sports and more. We also learned to Hula.

Wednesday- We learned about jellyfish and answered some questions about them. We also spent some time doing ABC order with Hawaiian words, learned about Pele- the fire goddess and volcanoes.

Thursday- We made our own jellyfish and added some facts we learned about them. In the morning we wrote about our favorite parts of Hawaii.  In the afternoon, my sister came to help us with our Hawaiian people craft.  My sister lived in Hawaii for three years and this unit is inspired by her. At the end of the day we had a hula hooping contest.

Friday- We just tried some pineapple, mango and Hawaiian bread.  DELICIOUS! Now, we are watching Lilo and Stitch and pointing out things we learned about this week that are in the movie.

Valentine's Day

Here are some pictures from Valentine's day.  My favorite activity of the year is done on this day.  Each child gets a heart with their name on it and everyone writes something nice about them on their heart.  We do compliment cards every week but this activity allows a kid to see everything great others think of them in one place.  Love it!

Also, thank you SO much to those of you that brought treats in for the party and to those of you that were able to come. Thank you to those that thought of me and brought me lots of chocolate.  I was on a sugar high all weekend.
